Made my hurt hurt, so so good, felt a physical pain in my heart, almost cried, hurt/comfort
He’d known, of course, that Eames had seen him looking pathetic, but it was a whole different thing. It felt new, with Eames wearing his perfect human face, human eyes. When the lion had been looking at him, Arthur’s stupid human instincts told him he was safe from perception, as if he’d been an ordinary lion, order carnivora, family felidae, species panthera leo, but now with only his own enormous eyes, intelligence and disdain clear in them, Arthur wanted to die of shame.
Eames was silent for a long time, and Arthur’s own internal mocking misery created a song to pass the time: the man you have a crush on has seen you cry and knows you’re a pussy and you’re going to die alone. After several repetitions of that verse, Eames said, “I don’t want you to do that again.”

Beautiful, unique, fascinating, awesome in so many ways. Explores loneliness and healthy relationships etc in ways that are amazing. (Heads up that the story accidentally switches back and forth between past and present tense. Hopefully the author rereads one day and updates that)

Arturiel nods, unsure why that requires delicacy. “I was there in the darkness before the Lord created light. I watched with my brethren as the earth was created and life was born. I—”
“I am also old,” Emerson interrupts, “although not as old as that, I admit. But when surrounded by humans with lives that only span a handful of decades, one begins to feel ancient rather quickly.” He turns to face Arturiel, one pointed tooth digging into the corner of his mouth. “Perhaps, as fellow beings who are far older than the humans who surround them, we might spend more time together. What do you think?”

Over the years, Eames has made his interest in Arthur no secret, and most people assume that Eames has been in lust since first sight. But really, his first thought was, “Why did you bring a kid straight from basic?”
Arthur, all gangly legs and in a belt that had to have an extra hole punched in it, bristled visibly in his corner but said nothing. Eames didn’t notice it at the time, but in the aftermath of everything, it makes sense to him that Arthur stood alone in his corner, that the other three members of the team stood, attentive, on the other side of the room. In the moment, Eames just chalked it up to Arthur’s clearly young age. -
