When Julie feels something precious and vital shatter inside her chest... that’s when she knows for sure.
And when the boys finally make it home hours later — emptyhanded, shamefaced, totally defeated — Julie knows something terrible has happened.
“What is it?” she demands, desperation pitching in her voice. “What did you do? What did Caleb do?” Silence. They only stare at her. “Did he hurt you?” Nothing. Blank faces, empty eyes. “Are you okay?”
“We’re sorry, Julie,” is all they’ll say. “Really sorry.”
( or: The boys try to rescue Willie from Caleb. Things go very, very wrong. Now, they're the ones who need rescuing, and Julie has to scramble to save them before it's too late. )

Bobby didn’t leave them. They left him.
And he’s moved on now.
That’s what stings the most.
Because grappling with death is a difficult task no matter what -- but Luke’s always been on the other side of it. The one crying over the casket, looking at old pictures, wishing more than anything that the person could be there to take new ones. Nose burning with the smell of too many flowers -- flowers that will just die, anyway, just like the person they’re for. Flowers that the person will never know they got in the first place.

There are some things that Reggie Peters is very good at. The bass, for one. Being a good friend, for two. Most of the things he’s good at he’s proud of, like math and writing music and memorizing fun facts about animals. Then there are some things he’s less proud of, like his uncanny ability to soothe away any suspicion that he’s anything less than okay with a smile and a well-timed joke. He’s working on that one, but the one upside is that he’s also very good at seeing when someone else is doing the same thing.

Summary
Emily wants to make things right with Luke, more than anything. She’s wanted that since before Christmas. And that’s why the flyer she found in the mailbox this morning is so important -- it’s the key that will unlock her future with Luke. The rocky, uncertain future that will be held together by the love that she has for her son above all else. The future that she’s already almost lost, that she won’t let slip through her fingers again.
Tonight, she’s going to talk to her son for the first time in months. After months of not knowing where he was, of panic and nightmares and fear that something terrible happened to him -- months of calls with the police department, asking if her missing person posters had turned up any leads. Months of wondering if Luke was hungry, or cold, or safe, or thinking about her. Months of praying, of wishing that her son knew that he would be welcomed back with open arms.
All of that pain and regret is going to end tonight. Emily’s going to make sure of it.
Because tonight, Luke and his friends are playing the Orpheum.

Summary
If loss is a skill that needs to be honed, Julie’s absolutely not interested in practicing it. The word ‘goodbye’ has become poison on her lips; it tastes sour after using it so many times. And it’s not just with death, either. Julie’s goodbye to Rose was the most difficult one, the most permanent, but Rose isn’t the only person who’s left Julie’s life due to circumstances outside of her control.
Carrie and Trevor Wilson. All four of Julie’s grandparents. That one therapist she had before Dr. Turner, who had to move out of town only six sessions in -- just as Julie was starting to open up to her.
Goodbyes are an unfortunate part of life, and Julie’s had practice.
But that doesn’t mean that she’s ready to play the Orpheum tomorrow and watch helplessly as Luke, Alex, and Reggie are taken away from her forever.
