Summary
It happened like this:
About two weeks ago, Linus gets a call from Danny asking if he’s free a couple Thursdays from now to hop over to California and steal some art. No big deal, they’ve pulled jobs together over a dozen times at this point. What the big deal is, what makes Linus’ brain stop for a second, is when Danny starts the pitch with Rusty and I had an idea, which doesn’t make a shred of sense because Rusty has been dead for about a decade and, as a result, can no longer have ideas or be around to make Danny happy or any of those things that he was an expert in.
Naturally, Linus says yes anyway, because he isn’t doing anything a couple Thursdays from now, and then he goes and asks his dad if he, by any chance, for no reason whatsoever, thinks that Danny is losing his mind a little.

Danny’s always been gentle, too much so for his own good. It’s gotten him in trouble before, and, if Rusty’s not careful, it’s going to get Danny in trouble again. Get him hurt, get him killed. It’d be just Rusty’s luck, and he can’t let that happen.
He can’t stay here, not in good conscience.
Not unless he’s okay with something bad happening, and with it being all his fault.

Until about two weeks ago, no one else had known Rusty was alive, and Rusty had worked very hard (and cried and pleaded with Danny over the whole thing when he really didn’t have to) to keep it that way.
Linus doesn’t know any of this though, so they can’t properly blame him, but that doesn’t stop Rusty from looking irked in the general sense.

He looks older, more tired, his hair is longer, and his outfit is an entirely different kind of disaster than what Danny had been used to, but he hasn’t changed so much that he’s unrecognizable. Just like that, Danny feels his breath catch in his chest.
“Rusty,” he repeats, then follows it up with “that’s an awful jacket.”
