Xeno, a StaHo who was chosen to be a part of the creation of a rewind (Cam), and Pat, a troubled StaHo who was set to be unwound due to his behavioral issues.
Xeno and Pat Ward bump into each other after a clapper attack happened at their ward. Both decided to team up and hope for the best. As the two StaHos run for their lives, they meet two AWOLs named Sage and Alan. Alan, a garage band guitarist, and Sage, a Brazilian kid whose parents want to cook him. -

I hadn’t heard from Elias in a while, and it was beginning to worry me; we usually never went a day without talking, definitely not a whole two weeks. We had been talking about running away together the moment we turned eighteen, only a month away, and now he had vanished.

It began with a sudden rise in crime, particularly crimes committed by individuals between the ages of 13 and 18. People began to doubt that banning unwinding was a good idea, despite what people like Risa Ward, Lev Calder, Cyrus Finch, and Connor Lassiter said. Eventually, ads began to play, saying that organ printing was bad and unwinding was good. And the worst part: they were convincing.

Summary
"We can help you." Connor pleads to the clapper, unsure if the boy can understand him at that moment. His words seem to strengthen the kid's resolve and before Connor can blink he swings his arms out wide in preparation for the clap.
Connor leaps towards Lev and they both topple onto the ground. He wraps his arms around Lev, his small form tucked between Connor's body and the floor as the explosion goes off. The next thing he knew was searing pain followed by the quiet relief of unconsciousness.

Summary
The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child "unwound," whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state, is not enough to be kept alive. Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Em, also a ward of the state, is too “feral” to be contained. And Jules recently came out to his homophobic parents, dooming himself to an Unwind order. Together they may have a chance to escape and to survive.

Lev was no longer something tangible. The only Calder sibling who had moaned and dismayed and rejected his role as guardian of the holy child through his thirteen years of duty. Of course, Lev notes, his big brother decides to claw his way to the ends of the earth to protect him only now that he's being told to let go. Typical.
