Wherever she was, there would be someone who would undoubtedly fall in love with her and who would want to make her their wife, and that would be the worst truth of all. It had snuck up on Xenia, this pain and terror and rage at the thought of anyone else with her. Every look, every word from her... she didn't even know when it had started, but it lingered beneath the surface all the same.

“Is a privilege given only to you,” Lyrei whispered into her mouth. “I meant what I said. In this life you and I will always be equals, no bowing and no titles. As far as I am concerned, you are every bit the queen that I am.”

“You’re still angry,” Xenia stated as she stared at her heavily pregnant and ridiculously stubborn wife. If anything, her natural stubbornness was only making the hormones more bothersome.
“And you’re still not sorry.”
“I still stand by what I said. Do you want me to lie about it?” she asked, raising an eyebrow in that distinctly unimpressed way that only she could whilst talking to the queen. “You need to stop being so self-willed and learn when to rest.”
“No, I want you to rethink it and come up with the right opinion.”
She’d had to let go of the notion of trying to make her wife understand why even queen’s ought to rest long ago. There was simply no point in trying to dictate what her sweet Lyrei thought about anything. Which, if she was being entirely honest with herself, was one of the reasons she loved her so much.
“Well why don’t you come be miffed at a nearer distance?”
“I really don’t need to rest. I feel perfectly well.”
“Sweet girl.” She spoke gently, knowing how fragile her wife’s emotions had been of late. “You are heavily pregnant and you are supposed to be resting.”

She waved one of her bottom hands dismissively as she leaned on her cane. “I’m really quite well. The fresh air is doing wonders.”
That was a boldfaced lie… and it wasn’t even a particularly good one. Frankly, it was as close to being downright pathetic as she’d ever been.
“Would you like to say that again without swaying on your feet, you stubborn, stubborn woman?” Lyrei sighed as she reached her side and steadied her with a supporting hand in the small of her back.
“You’re calling me stubborn?” she snorted. “Please. Do not make me laugh, sweet girl.”
Despite how badly she wanted to be irritated at the fact her sweet Lyrei was determined to make her rest and was giving her the same look she gave to their children when they were being stubborn, she couldn’t be. Not when she knew only too well how it felt to weather the spans alone, with no one who truly cared whether she had the flu or not.
“I really was considering the notion of sitting down but then I was all but accosted by three little pirates who’d stolen weapons from the armoury and made it their days mission to break out of the palace whether I accompanied them or not.”

I never meant to, but I cut. And yet she clung to me, and I knew she would clasp me until the blood flowed from her, too. I realised when I looked at her, I was looking at the purest love I would ever know… and I honestly believed that with all my limitations all I’d do was harm her.” The older woman sighed and took another sip of her wine. “She hates me, Xenia, and the worst part is I know I deserve it.”
“She doesn’t hate you. Can you truly not see that a family is all she has ever wanted? She’s frightened of you because she cannot control where, when, or why you will leave her again. So she’s taken a standing-point outside herself, is observing herself as a disinterested spectator, and is clinging to what little control that your methods of getting rid of her have left her with.”

The queen struggled not to laugh too much as she swallowed the vegetables in her mouth. “Alright then, if you insist, you can forge my signature and add my comments to the margins of each page once I’ve finished reading and approving the documents. Iris is sleeping in my dominant arm and I don’t have the heart to move him so I can write things legibly.”
“How bold of you to assume a perfectly law abiding citizen such as myself would know how to forge your signature, your majesty,” she teased.
“How bold of you to assume I’m unaware that you’ve done it three times this past week,” Lyrei smirked.

In the five spans that had passed since that wintry night in The Wilds when she’d first met the girl who’d grow into the strongest queen Lysende had ever known she could count on one hand the amount of times she’d bore witness to her becoming so incapacitated by her own mind. Usually it was due to important matters of state or decisions that she and she alone had to make for the good of her dominion, and usually her distress passed fairly quickly.
But this time was different.
This time she was genuinely afraid for Lyrei’s wellbeing in ways she had not been since their war with Vayne.
This time she was powerless to do anything but stand by and watch what was meant to be unfold— this time the only one who could comfort the queen was a woman who’d been suspended in a magical slumber for more than a century.

Red hair was like silk between Xenia’s fingers as she slowly ran her fingers through the length of it. It felt unbearably childish and silly to say that she couldn’t bear to lose her. Xenia had lost so much already and the Queen was not an object capable of being possessed. But to the spy, she was light. Her entrance into her life had conjured nothing but the brightest of lights, and losing the light of her heart would undoubtedly plunge her straight back into darkness. She’d never say so out loud, but she didn’t think she had it in her to claw herself out of it again.

Standing at the right hand side of the throne, she looked every inch the most dangerous spy from the Court of Queen Lyrei, down to the subtly threatening smile pulling at the corner of her beautiful mouth. “Her majesty has given you her answer, multiple times. To think that you have any right to make decisions about who she shares her body with and attempt push her into agreeing to something like this, when she has made it quite clear that she is uncomfortable, is appalling behaviour.”

The overwhelming colours of the evening moved around Xenia as she chased her girlfriend beneath the arches made almost entirely of yellow roses and ivy, their laughter floating on the breeze. The gardens glowed. The mixture of golden, red, and green leaves flashed by, each one blazing like sparks caught in the updraft of a fire. A scarlet carpet unrolled before them, rich and flawless velvet over the marble mosaicked paths. Rising from the freshly trimmed grass, the brown, tangled roots breathed a bluish mist that reduced the farthest trees' trunks to ghostly silhouettes, yet left their foliage's luminous hues untouched.
The queen’s long teal dress made entirely out of silk spiralled out behind her as she ran, her long flame coloured hair sparkling in a multitude of coppery hues beneath her diamond tiara. Every shadow and fleck of setting sun swayed, dipped, and rolled across the private gardens the way a room did after one too many cocktails, and entwined through it all, the colliding scents of the city; Autumn’s smokey wood fire and Spring’s floral cherry blossom, Winter’s icy snowmelt and Sumer’s fresh fruits.
