007n7 holds his breath, the likelihood of certain outcomes came a little delayed. "There wasn't enough time— If he turned the corner at the last second, he would have attacked you first." He wasn't wrong. Any person who could generate consistent heals for multiple people was an easy target. No geniuses with PhD's needed to know that. "It was a strategy, I was trying to throw Jason off."
Elliot himself knew as well, his safety as healer was the team's main priority. Despite this, the clenched grip of his gloves still tightened. "And leave yourself stranded out there in the open? Looming killer on the horizon?"
007n7's hand now raised to his head, now running against his Burger Bob hat in guilt. The Noob part of his cap looked downward, dotted eyes closed and pensive. "It….It also wasn't the brightest idea, no. But I couldn't just stand around and watch you get killed!"
The explanation was almost laughable. His scripts were his own, and also an extension of him. A limited repertoire of tools at his command, to yield it for another person's safety was outlandish. A palm runs down the side of Elliot's face, yellow curls and the front of his red visor slipping between the fingers.
"You don't," Elliot's voice pauses, elbow on the kitchen counter as a new pizza was stuck into the oven. "You don't need to protect me, Seven. That's never been what you're meant to do."
007n7 stared back at the oven, crimson fumes and scent of pepperoni flooded the air.
Slowly, Elliot became someone who cooked under pressure. A side effect of being the primary healer on the field, and an expansion of his ability to manifest food in milliseconds. The meals didn't taste any less poor, top notch quality courtesy of a top notch employee. But the sweat drops and stress clued him in far earlier that it wasn't just something to pass the time.
007n7 didn't realize it before, but perhaps the two of them had similar (albeit still quite different) coping mechanisms. He purposely shut himself out, while Elliot was still bent on working.
"I..I know that, but." 007n7 pauses, the clock ticking to the next hour. "I felt like I had to. Time was running out, you were almost dead and I—” He looked back with renewed remorse.
"—I panicked, okay? I saw you tensed up in complete fear, and the first thing that came to mind was helping you live. I couldn't care less about me."
Vulnerability seeped into 007n7 enough to make his gut twist and turn. A solid reminder of where he stood in this society — an exploiter with far too big of a heart these days. A flaw that he'd call himself stupid for, if it still mattered.
The silence returns, another needle falls to the ground.
Elliot sighs.
"They don't - they don't tell you how to do a job like this."
Elliot spoke again, voice wavering as it began to soften towards the older man.
