Inter-house raids weren’t uncommon. A larger crew dealing with a smaller one, taking some of their members, their supplies, and getting lost. Safer than attacking a human settlement that might be protected by a Lightbearer. The bigger crew’s Captain might even have the Captain killed to cut back on competition for higher titles, Baron positions that came up. Preksik had figured his crew was too small to gain any attention, him too young a Captain to be noteworthy.
