2B thought about that, then exhaled deeply, something in her chest seeming to loosen. “I never have to be ‘2E’ again. I… can be 2B now, for real.” After talking to A2 the other week, she felt more comfortable allowing herself this.
She looked at 2B for a moment before looking back to the sky, hints of sadness in her expression. “I don’t understand why they would use No. 2 data for an E-type model. Making someone whose nature is to fight only for their comrades be an E-type… was cruel.”
A2 understood her. She had just put words to the instinct 2B had felt from the beginning. But how did—Oh. After all, A2 was a No. 2 model as well… “I always told myself at first that by executing those who betrayed YoRHa, I was protecting everyone else,” she said softly, tears forming in her eyes. “…Until it was 9S. “I guess so,” she said, wrapping her arms around herself. She hadn’t even noticed it until Popola pointed it out. It explained why she felt so unsteady.
“Come here.” She stepped in front of Devola, opening her arms.
Without hesitation, she allowed Popola to hold her. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
“Are you feeling uneasy about something? What’s on your mind?”
Devola shook her head. There wasn’t anything specific that she could point to as troubling her, and yet she couldn’t deny that she felt troubled. “I… want to drink.”

Pod set to work booting up 6O. Once the startup sequence had completed, her eyes opened.
The first thing she saw was 2B, which brought a smile to her face – she had never expected to wake up to 2B. But as soon as she processed what she saw around 2B, she could tell something had drastically changed. 6O sat up. “2B? Where am I?” She looked down at her outfit, which was that of a B-type instead of an O-type. A thread of panic made its way through her chest, not liking that she had no idea what was going on.
“You’re on Earth,” she said, hoping that if she stayed calm, it would help 6O calm down as well. She had had faith in the process, but even so, she was immensely relieved to see 6O awake and well.
6O looked around, curiosity sparkling in her eyes. She had a number of questions, and still felt deeply uneasy about what might have prompted her to be on Earth in a B-type body, but she couldn’t deny hoping that this was a chance for her to explore Earth as she had often wished to.
“We’ll explain everything soon, but it makes more sense to explain it once to both of you,” 2B told her, nodding at 21O, who the Pods were working on waking.Series

Devola and Popola were riding moose. Devola had a container full of something in front of her, and Popola was shaking a box full of metal scraps like a maraca – the closest they could get to bells.
The two sisters shared an amused look. While the two of them had their memories of humanity erased when they were rebooted after Project Gestalt, an unconscious part of them remembered enough to have the sense that this whole thing was comically inaccurate.
But it had seemed entertaining, so just as 6O had instructed her to say, Popola said, “Ho, ho, ho, happy Christmas!” as she approached and handed each of them a crystal.
“Don’t call me a ho,” Jackass quipped at the same time A2 said, “This is a crystal, not a hoe.”
Devola just barely stifled a laugh.
“According to the books I read, the most important part of Christmas was when someone dressed in red and white gave everybody shiny things called ‘Christmas presents,’” 6O explained. She was very pleased with herself – they were even riding animals just like the red and white dressed people had in the books she read.Series

“I… wasn’t prepared for how much 6O reminds me of No. 4. They’re different, but it’s that same optimism and always trying to cheer everyone up.” She drew her knees to her chest. Of all of them, the one who she tended to remember most was No. 4.
“Yeah. Seeing 21O is harder than I thought it would be, too,” Anemone admitted softly, looking down at her hands. She didn’t regret killing No. 21. It wasn’t like there had been any alternative – since No. 21 couldn’t erase the virus, and she was the only one with the capability to do that at all, there hadn’t been any chance of saving her. But it still brought back strong memories. She had shot countless allies due to infection, but something made the situation with No. 21 all the more vivid in her mind.
Perhaps it was because after seeing No. 21 cure Lily, she had gotten a sense of hope that she wouldn’t lose anymore allies to the virus, and then she’d had that hope ripped away.
“I miss them, Anemone.” She knew that this was likely so obvious that the words were redundant, but she didn’t know what else to say.
Anemone placed an arm around A2’s shoulders. “I know. I do too.”Series
