Summary
If A2 had known from the beginning what those machine terminal girls had told her, she would have deserted in the first place. She could imagine Number 21 in particular not being happy with the suggestion to so clearly violate orders and martial law, but they could have probably worked with Captain Rose to create a new life for themselves as part of the Resistance. Maybe some of them would have still been lost to the viruses, but maybe Number 21 could have learned new patterns to continue to outsmart them.
Maybe they could have been happy that way. Maybe they could have survived.
“If I had known we were being used… that we were sacrifices, I would never have gone through with the mission. Or gotten the Resistance involved.” A2’s voice was now quiet with grief.
“I know,” 2B said, her voice softening to match.
“If it isn’t the machines’ fault… and it isn’t her fault… then the only one I have left to blame is myself.”Series

9S felt 2B’s gaze on him, but he didn’t meet it. Instead, he found himself thinking about the data he somehow had found when he was first activated, and the sense he had had when he first met 2B that he trusted and cared about her right away. The data left behind hadn’t been clear – just that there was someone who had been deeply important to the old version of himself, and he had enjoyed spending time with that person. It had taken him some time to realize that had anything to do with his immediate reaction to 2B.Series

Jackass looked at her intently for a few seconds before realization dawned on her. Her voice was uncharacteristically soft with understanding as she said, “…You want to try to bring them back.”
Jackass hadn’t been with them on the ground at the time of that fateful mission, but she had tended to provide support to their group from afar. She would stop by their camp periodically with new intel on things like the ways machines had been evolving in other areas and what had been successful in fighting them so far, or to gather information from them on what they had been seeing in the local machines lately.
They had had one such visit during that mission, though it was brief. Rose had shared, with cautious optimism, that there was a possibility units equipped with hacking abilities were now able to remove viruses from infected units. It had almost crushed Anemone to have to tell her otherwise, the next time they saw one another.Series

“That’s not a bad idea,” A2 mused. “As long as we’re gathering materials, we might want to think about something to protect the garden from wild animals.”
“Protect it?”
“It depends on what we end up growing, but they might try to eat the plants.”
Her eyes lit up. “We could feed them! We could attract some cute animals!”
That almost got A2 to laugh. “We could start a separate garden for that, once we have an idea what everything is. But we won’t be able to grow more if animals eat all the seeds.”
So if they waited, they could make sure they continued to have enough food for the cute animals, but if they rushed and let the animals into the current garden, that would make it more temporary. She could be patient, then.

What kinds of things she liked to do? Spending time with 2B was at the top of the list, followed by spending time with Anemone. “I like spending time with my friends. 2B likes to fish, so I go fishing with her a lot.” She smiled at 2B and admitted, “Maybe it’s growing on me, too.” Or maybe she just was happy to do anything, so long as it was with 2B and not dangerous. “What about you? I know you just got to Earth, but is there anything else you’d like to do?”
“Back on the Bunker, I liked looking at old world archives on plants and animals. Now that I’m on Earth, I want to try growing some flowers! I also hope that I can meet one of the animals known as a ‘cat’! Rumor has it that they were widely regarded as the cutest of all creatures!”
Her enthusiasm for cats when she had never even seen one got a chuckle out of A2. “You know, until your generation, all androids that I know of had simulated memories. Memories of a human life in the old world, that they thought would help us diversify on the battlefield. In my simulated memories, we had a cat who lived on our farm.”

2B bit her lip. She knew that A2 was deeply angry with the Commander, so she hesitated to tell her the truth. But just as A2 had promised to try to be open with her, she felt it was important to be honest with A2. “You don’t have to help me if you don’t want to, but I want to find the Commander. “What about you? What are you doing all the way out here?” 2B asked, curious if A2 had been here for any specific reason.
A2 averted her eyes, embarrassed to admit the reason she was… well, most likely in the middle of nowhere.
To be fair, everything was “the middle of nowhere” except 2B’s home base and the Resistance Camp. And yet, any other android would be able to navigate themselves back to those locations…
She had never understood what was wrong with her. It should have been impossible for an android to get lost, and yet even in a fairly small space, she got turned around and lost her way easily. Even now that she had seen so many different places, that hadn’t changed. Yet, no scans had ever turned up any defects, as far as she was aware.
Eventually, she decided to be honest. She had told 2B she would try to stop pushing her away, and part of that meant attempting to open up to her. Perhaps this was a good opportunity to see what it was like to be completely honest with her. “I don’t know why, but I’ve always had difficulties navigating. Honestly, I thought I’d go to the river to get some water, but I never found it.”
