To Elizabeth, marriage was a fascinating institution.
She had imagined being married many times, imagine the kind of house she would have and the kind of wife she would be. She had imagined taking the place of a married woman in Meryton society. But she had never given much thought, no thought at all really, to the man who would take the title of her husband.
While Elizabeth had never paid much heed to her mother's laments on the limited society of their town, she had known from a young age that no man lived in Meryton that she wished to marry, and while there were the occasional visitors, Elizabeth had not given any of them serious consideration.
And so, to be sitting in a rather luxurious carriage, to be alone with a man for the first time in her life, was a rather surreal experience.
