James Beaufort is perfect, how could he not be? He has money, good grades, a new one night stand all the time, everything is perfect. At least that's how he made it look. He did exactly what his father taught him from an early age. Because a Beaufort doesn't show any weakness, let alone cry.
Over the years, James perfected his mask, so perfectly that he couldn't even remember the last time he showed his true feelings. Most of the time he only felt just numb, an emptiness that he tried to fill with alcohol, sex and drugs.
In the beginning it worked, he could forget everything around him but at some point it was gone, the kick, and again he felt nothing. And during some sleepless nights, everything seemed to collapse on him and he felt an incredible pain, a pain that took his breath away like someone was tearing him apart from the inside.Until she came.

"I was thinking…" she starts and James nods, intrigued and a bit amused because when is Ruby Bell not thinking? She pauses, eyes still fixed on him, and James knows that whatever she says next will decide where they go from here.
"I think the past is... overrated.”
Something in James settles at her words.
So this is it. He won’t have to pretend he doesn't know her, won’t have to pretend that whatever this is, this charged tension between them, doesn't intrigue him.
It feels good to know it's not one-sided.
