Sometimes, Hydra’s there too, holding her hand across Rusty’s waist as they mutter in their sleep against Rusty’s shoulder, and in those dreams her core couldn’t feel fuller with love-

Hydra was terrible at taking care of himself.
That was just a well known fact on the yard. It wasn't uncommon to see Hydra pushing himself to be useful to Rusty on long journeys, or to prove himself as a fuel source to others who were actually starting to take him seriously. If he wasn't found slumped in a sunbeam, or passed out against the siding of a shed after exhausting himself at least once in a month, it was a miracle from the Starlight herself.
There'd been no such miracles lately.

Summary
Proud of her own working form as she was, Momma knew it wasn’t ideal, having Rusty meld with a steam engine. Control had him set to be a shunter, so he wouldn’t be traveling beyond the yard much, if at all, unless he took up racing (and he did often talk about wanting to race). But she’d still held off as long as she could - both to see if another option presented itself (a long shot), and to see how far the refurbishments to the steam engine got. It wasn’t a perfect option, and funds were tight for the yard. Some parts worked, technically, but were rusted, not yet replaced or cleaned up before it became clear that Rusty would have to meld sooner rather than later. Rusty had taken it in stride, joked that his name would suit him now.

Canon otherwise proceeds as usual but with flipped and darker framing. ft. Electra McFreaking Losing it over years of being the actual societal and cultural loser vs steam and throwing the first punch, the Starlight Sequence turned into a neoliberal nightmare omen, and a global train apocalypse due to privatization. Rusty fans don’t look, you won’t like this.

Hydra was made to be cryogenic. He was a prototype. Unlike other hydrogen trains that operated using hydrogen fuel cells, or carried hydrogen gas, he was made to carry it in a liquid form, pumping around his body like oil. Which meant that his body was impossibly cold.
And Rusty, being a steam train, who moved by burning his fuel? Well, he was impossibly hot, especially to Hydra. Just a single touch felt like he was being burned.
So they would sneak away to have private time, in the dead of night, when the temperatures dropped enough that Rusty cooled down.
