Eddie rights him quickly, getting Steve back to his feet and stepping away, hands falling safely back to his sides.
Steve is too stunned to say anything, even after Eddie holds out his jacket and vest. Steve carefully takes them, their hands nowhere near brushing, and shrugs on the leather and denim wordlessly. It smells of cigarette smoke and lake water, alpha musk and peppery clove. The vest is still damp from Eddie’s dive from the boat.
Or, the five times Steve refuses to be touched, and one time he reaches out.

Eddie starts talking before he opens the door enough to see Max, rubbing at his eyes. “Did you forget something, Stevie-” He pauses when he finally sees Max, whose eyebrows are knit together in a frown. Stevie? She’s only ever heard Eddie call Steve by his last name or by some mocking title before. “Oh. Hey Red, I thought- I thought you were someone else,” he tacks on with an awkward laugh, a hand hanging from his neck.
Max studies him for a moment. He’s in boxers and a shirt that could very well be the same one that Steve was wearing, equally slept in. They both must’ve woken up recently- Eddie’s hair is even more of a mess than Steve’s was.
“Who? Steve?” She asks, and Eddie makes a noncommittal sound. “Nah, he left already.”
Eddie bites his lip. “You- you saw him?”
“I was fixing my skateboard outside when he came out.” She narrows her eyes at him. “Wearing your shirt.”
“Um.”

“Uh,” Eddie says. Steve looks up from between Eddie’s knees, still dragging his hands down Eddie’s chest. He loves making Eddie look like that—already so fucked out and panting just from kissing him. Steve’s pretty sure he could get Eddie to cry if he really wanted to. But right now, that hazy, horny look on his face is quickly getting replaced by a look of awkward horror, and Steve does his best to hold back a sigh. “What are you doing?”
Steve’s hands slide from Eddie’s chest, down his belly, to cup the hard line of heat in Eddie’s jeans. He does it quickly, before Eddie can say something stupid like, "You don’t really want this."
“I want to blow you,” Steve says.
Or, Steve is in love with Eddie, and if he has to get on his knees to prove it, well...

"See?" He cuts him off "You can't say shit. You wouldn't risk anything either"
