There was an ache that lived beneath Eddie’s skin, one that he couldn’t just write off to his healing muscles, the warped and scarred skin of his torso and legs. It was an ache that radiated from somewhere deeper, something that went beyond his flesh and bones. One that he’d only ever felt soothed by physical affection; a ruffle of his hair, a hand cupping his cheek, a pat on the back, a kiss, a tight hug.

“I can’t take much more of this, Jesus H. Christ.” Eddie moans, his hands falling to his knees as he hunches over.
Commentators flash up on the screen and Steve supposes intermission is as good a time as any to interject.
“Would some company help?”
Eddie whips to the right and there it is: wide eyes, mouth ajar, raised eyebrows, flaring nostrils, and the tell-tale darkening of Eddie’s cheeks. Steve only assumes his ears follow suit— they usually do when he’s flustered but Eddie’s hair blocks the view. His hand flies to his chest, startled on top of it all.
The Bruins are going into overtime and his deepest, darkest secret was just unceremoniously discovered.
It’s been a rough day.

“Yeah. No. I- I- I know exactly what time it was,” Eddie said as he fumbled with removing his watch. “My… walkie wasn’t the only thing that got soaked.”
Steve squinted when Eddie tossed his watch to Nancy. Before his leather jacket fell back over his left wrist, he got a glimpse of a familiar mark. It made him very aware of the watch on his own left wrist.

As they followed Dustin through the woods, Steve fiddled with his watch. It was just a coincidence. It had to be. What else could it be? He pulled his watch down his wrist to see the pale birthmark he kept hidden under the band. It wasn’t large, just an irregularly circular, scar-like pale spot. For some reason, it bothered him that Eddie seemed to have the same birthmark in the exact same spot. Those odds had to be stupidly rare. He had to check. There was no way they were identical.
“Eddie,” Steve called out as they lagged behind a little.
“What’s up, man?” Eddie stumbled slightly as he turned to face Steve.

“Jesus fuckin– where did I–?” Eddie mutters around the screwdriver in his mouth. He pulls it free and turns to Steve. “You got any idea where the instructions went?”
“Stay there,” Steve says. “I’ll go find it.”
A plain sheet of paper face down on the desk, crumpled and smoothed out again, with a rip at the bottom corner like whoever was reading it got pissed and almost tore it to shreds before thinking better of it. Bingo.
Steve flips it over excitedly, wanting to make sure he found the right thing before he goes running back to Eddie, but it’s not the instruction page. It’s a handwritten to-do list, inked in a mix of permanent marker and pen, only a few items ticked off and the dates scratched out again and again at the top, and then, written in huge letters at the bottom of the page, lines pressed so hard they nearly puncture the paper:
stop being a FUCKING COWARD and KISS STEVE ALREADY!!!

So needless to say, Eddie was not having fun. Like -10/10 stars wouldn't ever recommend.
He supposed there might be a few plus sides, like hanging out with Steve. Though if Eddie had to pick a way to hang with his longtime crush it wouldn't have been like this.
However seeing those freaky bats hurt Steve was terrifying. Finding out Nancy Wheeler had multiple guns was shocking, and he made a mental note not to piss her off. And Robin was starting to make him paranoid about demobat rabies.
