Caleb was a very reclusive person as is. And after (unintentionally) ending his last relationship with Astrid and Eadwulf, he had no particular desire to enter another relationship, sexual or not. It was on those occasions that the air became thick and cloying around him like a cloud of perpetual smoke, making it hard to breathe. His mind would supply him with all the reasons why he wasn't worthy of the life he was leading, of his teaching position, of interacting with his betters: people who were innocent and untouched by darkness.

Caleb is spiraling out of control, pushing his friends and chosen family away, isolating himself from those who care about him. Eventually, Essek decides to do something about it. He knows that nothing mundane like talking would be of any help, so he offers Caleb what the human thinks he wants: punishment, atonement, debasement, a way to quiet the vicious voices in his head. -

When they'd first started this relationship, Fjord had felt endlessly nervous. Learning to let his guard down like this with one person like this was hard enough, even as easy as Jester made it. Sex was tricky for Fjord sometimes, the vulnerability of it, the weight of holding someone else’s trust in your hands, fragile, breakable. Essek’s trust, to take care of the man they both loved when he couldn’t. Jester’s trust, to keep a tight leash on his jealousy and his fear of not being enough, to not let the terror of falling short get in the way of the delicate web that wove them all together. And most of all, Caleb’s trust, to break him without hurting him.
