Evan is fourteen the first time Connor recklessly puts himself in danger to keep him safe, and even back then, Evan knows it won’t be the last. It’s all a mess of shouting and flailing fists, but Connor ends up with a bruise on his cheek and a cut on his chin, and he’s sent back to the room he and Evan share without any dinner. Evan sneaks him some anyways, earning himself a sharp grin. Connor looks triumphant, even with purple tones blooming across his skin, even though he flinches away with a soft hiss When Evan reaches out to brush his thumb across his lip, frowning sympathetically.
He lets it happen, though, and for the first time since Evan’s met him, Connor’s shoulders relax as Evan quietly presses a cotton ball soaked with hydrogen peroxide to the cut, making sure it’s clean. There’s no words exchanged between them, both seemingly equally afraid to break the soft peace that’s settled over them like fresh snow.
