It always takes Dong-er a moment or two to remember where and when she is when she wakes up like this: breathing through paper thin lungs, skin tacky with sweat, shivering and staring into the black of the night. She is on an old, foul-smelling bedroll, sleeping overnight as she is transported from her parents’ home to Beijing. No, wait. She is in the servants’ quarters at the manor, startled awake by crying or snoring or someone shouting in their sleep. No, that was over a decade ago. She is in a cell, surrounded by sniffling children, pressing into the dark shadows next to a boy with warm hands and a clever plan. No. Less long ago, but still not right. Dong-er turns and flings open the window above her bed, letting in moonlight and taking a greedy gulp of night air. It burns her nose and lungs with it’s frigidity, and she takes in the sight of the familiar courtyard as her heart slows.
This is her home. Sui Zhou and Tang Fan’s home. And she is no longer a child.
