“I… what? No. I’m looking for my friend. He’s kinda short, with brown hair and a bad haircut. Always in flannel and is a complete dumbass.”
Spider-man squinted. “And why’s that?”
“Because he decided to go on a walk at night, alone.”
One of his eyes widened. “Aren’t you doing the same thing?”
Mike spluttered, crossing arms protectively over his chest. “Well- it- it’s for a noble cause! He’s also sick! He might be passed out in an alleyway or something!”
“… how about this. I’ll walk you home then I’ll find your friend for you? I’ll bring him right back to you. Yeah?”

What Mike wanted was to pretend everything was completely fine. To hang up the phone and continue to look away from the thing in the corner of his eye. But it was getting too large. The unrelenting blanket of anxiety was becoming too heavy, the escape route far too small.
Maybe that was why he found himself here, on the phone in the middle of the night. Talking to a boy hundreds of miles away.

There are inconsistencies, too many of them. Mike doesn't notice them at first, but something doesn't add up. What if they didn't win? What if it really never was that easy. And, well, I don't know about you guys.. but I don't believe in coincidences.

Summary
For the first time in four years, Will Byers is free. The grip the upside-down had on him has been relinquished, and he and his friends can live out the few months of childhood they have left.
But nothing is quite right: Lucas is but a shell of a person, Dustin has forgotten his girlfriend of two years, and Mike? Mike Wheeler, the heart of the group, has been a ghost of who he was for a long, long time.
And it's not just his old party: Robin, Jonathan, Hopper, Nancy, even his Mom, the same woman who would not rest till she found the truth all those years ago, glaze over their final battle like it was nothing.
A final fight that was too easy, a flickering reality of a town, a heart withering and rotting with grief in his basement. Just like that, Will begins to question just who won that last fight and how exactly he helped Vecna one last time.
