Lin Ling has always wanted to travel. He's never had much opportunity to, having survived on instant noodles for years now. But he follows a lot of travel blogs on the internet. It's how he originally found out about his goddess, Moon- she popped up on his feed after a while. He yearns to travel, to see beautiful sights and immerse himself in cultures so different from his own.
Nice invites his crush on a company-sponsored vacation. It was a random selection for a work opportunity, of course.
(Nice totally didn't break into the office in the dead of night to make sure Lin Ling's name would be the one drawn. He would never.)

When Nice first asked Lin Ling out, it was with a large bouquet of red roses. He got down on one knee, looked up at him with those piercing blue eyes, and asked in the sweetest, most nervous voice Lin Ling had ever heard from him if Lin Ling would be his. His cheeks had been a rosy red that stole the breath from Lin Ling's lungs. Of course he'd said yes. Nice was there for him when Moon died, even though he surely had to be grieving the loss of his late girlfriend himself. Nice was always kind, always there for him- he was perfect.
Dark red blood dripped down Nice's face, disgusting and dirty and contaminated-
But it's okay.
Nice can be strong.
Because it's all for him.

He first noticed something was off in Petralune Town.
It was his first stop in the Velun region, a small town in a region he’d never visited before.
He’d stopped there to rest, grab a meal, and take a photo of a really fat Bidoof he’d seen waddling near a fountain. It was a peaceful little afternoon—until a teenager with bright pink hair and far too much eyeliner stomped up to him and threw a Poké Ball with a dramatic flourish.
“You’re not fooling anyone, Nice!”
The Poké Ball hit the ground. Out came a Luxio with what Lin Ling swears was a sparkle animation. Lin Ling blinked, halfway through chewing his food.
“Sorry?” he mumbled around his food.

Lin Ling is flameless. Any test the family put him through always gave no results.
Not even a flicker. Not once. Not during training. Not even when they tried artificial life or death stimulation during a Mist-heavy battlefield drill.
“No flame affinity,” the test paper read. “Unfit for guardian role. Useful only in support roles.”
He believed it.
He made peace with it.
But peace built on silence is a fragile thing.
And sometimes, all it takes to shake it is a single misplaced file and a passing glance to shatter it.
