Summary
“I promise this is real,” Madara murmurs. He shudders at the kiss pressed to his temple, broad hand gently stroking his hair, cradling his head. “I’m here with you now. I won’t ever leave.”
The pounding ache in his skull sinks its claws deeper, vision fuzzy around the edges. He can’t breathe like this. His mouth tastes of grave dirt and ash. His fingers draw tighter. The cloth feels dusty beneath his hands, sand slipping through his fingers, gritty on his skin.
This position is familiar by now. Stuck in a cage of flesh, bone, and sinew that wound its loving arms around him, that rubbed soothing circles on his back. Poison filters through his ears. It’s a slow decay. A controlled fall.
He takes a breath.
“This is never going to end.” It’s an absent-minded remark. A reconciliation of two conflicting halves, however brief. He’s ripped free from the embrace.
There is no happy ending to be had.

“So,” Madara continues. Tobirama feels her lips curl into a smile against her own. “Why haven’t you?”

“Why?” Madara replies, voice calm even as he feels his heartbeat speed up and the muscles in his legs tense. “Is there danger here?”
Something shimmers upon the altar, a pale trick of the light as the incense’s smoke clouds about the surface and then billows upward. In its midst he can just make out the shape of a man seated lazily on its surface, legs crossed beneath him.
“Danger?” The voice rumbles again and Madara feels his breath catch as the incense gives way and the full view of the shrine’s occupant comes into focus.
“Danger,” Madara repeats. “Or a dragon.”

Sure, when faced with an issue, people would usually need to allocate a few minutes for Jaskier’s initial blind panic and faffing about while he tried to think of a solution that would not get him injured, arrested, jobless, crying, adopting a third pet, calling his ex, calling his mum, dead in a ditch, or all of the above. However, the ideas that came after those first few minutes, and even his lovely manager would have to agree with him on this, were actually pretty good by some standards.

It only occurs to him afterward that he had the whole damn day to think of a way to introduce himself and he still didn’t come up with a better opening line than “bread in his pants”.
(In which Jaskier has prophetic dreams and Geralt is a little slow on the uptake.)

A bard seeking fortune wouldn't watch Geralt across the fire with eyes half-full of tears that he didn't bother to blink away. An artist looking for a muse wouldn't press close, desperately close, against Geralt's side until he finally gave in and turned his head. A young man after a quick fuck wouldn't grip Geralt to him hard enough to bruise even a witcher.
The way Jaskier looks at Geralt makes him think he should know the answer already, but he doesn't, he doesn't.
"Because I know you," he says at last. "Because I have known you. Because I will know you. Isn't that enough?"
(One day, Geralt will understand that it was the closest thing Jaskier will ever have to a goodbye, and it's enough, it's enough.)
