Summary
In all of his escapades, Mercutio has never quite understood the sturdiness of a brick wall till now. Tybalt Capulet’s hands are at his throat, holding his purple collar in bunches, teeth bared as he pushes Mercutio back—“if you speak again, I swear—”
Mercutio laughs. He knows what this is all over: some stupid jest he made back in the pub, where he took a woman into his lap and watched Tybalt’s face go red. The mention of Juliet—that secret infatuation which wasn’t as secret as Tybalt believed—came naturally.
But—“Tybalt, my Tybalt, if you must know, I—I regret nothing—”
Tybalt’s hands are clenching tighter now, his cheeks gaining a blush—the very same that got him into this mess. Mercutio can only laugh again. Here’s the Capulet dog, ready to bite, ready to snarl and scrap for leftovers in the sun.

Mercutio makes the wrong joke at the wrong time. Tybalt makes him pay. Gay yearning ensues.

Maybe he shouldn’t have said anything; it would have been easy enough to pretend he was still asleep. Maybe he shouldn’t have followed Tybalt upstairs that night to begin with. Maybe he should have let that one brawl in an alley be just a brawl. It was in his rare moments of stillness that Mercutio found himself thinking of such things, and each time they consumed them.
He had always been like that. It was why he kept running.
