“Now is not the time for your games. Your wounds are grievous. Left untreated, even someone like you may succumb.” To his horror, Ratio offers him his arm, an expanse of marble smooth skin and thick veins. “You are my responsibility, gambler. I will not have you dying on me.”
His vision tunnels and his mouth begins to water. Momentarily, he is overcome by a sudden insanity. Just a taste, one single lick of that golden ichor — when was the last time he’d indulged? Not measly animal blood, but human?
The fact that it is Ratio offering, of all people, does not help.
Where Aventurine discovers his mind is sharper than his fangs, and blood grants clarity to more than just his hunger.

That Ratio cared about him at all was not a surprise. For all his sternness, there was a wellspring of incomprehensible devotion in him, a doctor’s instinct for the damned. The surprise was how much Aventurine wanted him to. How he’d slipped and lost his footing the moment he’d felt like someone would catch him. Aventurine couldn’t afford that comfort, and Ratio couldn’t afford the trouble Aventurine would bring him, inevitably, the distractions and the nonsense and all the reckless gambles.
Aventurine had cheated fate enough. And Ratio had other battles, more worth his while.
