It was so unfortunate. Wriothesley had abandoned his usual clothes, a palette of reds and shades of grey, for a fitted suit and a fur-lined cape that he’d unpinned to hook casually over one shoulder. The boxing tape that normally wrapped around his neck and forearms to cover his scars had been traded out for a high-collared jacket and an embroidered black shirt, left insouciantly open at the throat. His knee-length boots, smartly heeled, added an unnecessary and obnoxious couple of centimeters to his height; he radiated the relaxed confidence of a predator in his own territory.
Lyney disliked him immensely.

Only two weeks into the nightless days, Illuga hadn’t fought the Hunt in a month, and it was much the same over the rest of Nod-Krai, a welcome rest after three successive crises, beginning with Rerir and ending with Roland.
Illuga should be elated. He passed by the graves of Lightkeepers every night on patrol. He shouldn’t want to fight something.

Aventurine shrugged. “I had a lot better hearing as a kid,” he lied. In truth, he didn’t fully remember. He had to have had some way to communicate with his sister and the other people in his clan. Hell, he had to have some way to communicate with people not in his clan. He remembers the words to some prayers, his mouth shaped around them like a hot iron, something shameful and branding.
