In the mid-afternoon sunlight, Sylvain is resplendent. He’s lying on his side like he’s posing for a painting, open and inviting, propped up on a single elbow as his free hand toys with one of his fins. The water glistens off his spines, making something elegant of the deadly, and the red-black-white stripes of his tail and fins are more vibrant than ever against the backdrop of white sand and blue water. And his genuine smile, tiny and hopeful, never fails to make Khalid’s breath catch in his chest.
One of these days, Khalid hopes Sylvain will agree to pose for a sketch. He wants to keep him on his bedside stand, in his pocket, near his heart.

Summary
As Alfyn’s hands continue to tremble, breath lodged in his throat, he feels Zeph’s head rest against his shoulder. It’s a familiar notion. When Alfyn’s mama passed, when he stood at her grave and wept, Zeph leaned against him, silent as their fingers intertwined. It did nothing to abate the tears back then, and in the present, Alfyn fears they’re to start once more as Zeph’s hair brushes against his neck.
“I’m right here, Alf.” His voice carries the gentleness of the river.
Adults can cry too, Alfyn’s always told himself. He knows there lies no shame in letting his heart go. The release will help, it’ll crack the foundation of guilt he’s put himself upon, infinitesimal as it may be.
“I—” Alfyn sucks in a breath, and feels himself crumple before the words come. “I hurt someone, Zeph.”
