    Summary

With a heavy sigh, Kaveh buried his face in his pillow. All of his romantic ideals, as usual, were quashed by the one man he actually yearned for such affections from - a marriage for the sake of fucking tax deductions.

Though it made sense in a cold, rational way, such a logical and disinterested proposal for Kaveh to willingly sacrifice his heart for nothing more than mora cut deep into his chest. And worst of all... Alhaitham was unaware that Kaveh’s heart could never even belong to anyone but him - that he was already the sole benefactor of Kaveh’s silent longing, having stolen Kaveh’s heart against his will long ago.

Kaveh curled around his pillow as if the soft cotton of his pillowcase could offer a reprieve from the turmoil churning deep in his stomach. He’d long since made peace with his unrequited love for Alhaitham, resigning himself to a lifetime of suppressed yearning - but this? This was torture, plain and simple, demanding mental gymnastics that Kaveh wasn’t confident he was flexible enough to contort himself into.

    Summary

Now that Amphoreus finally knew peace, after thirty-three million agonizing cycles, he was determined to rebuild it, to shape a land where its people could breathe without fear. There was no room for indulgence, not yet. That was why he was still holding back on living for himself, there were wishes he still needed to grant before finally letting go.
That had been his selfless and totally heroic plan, until a certain gorgeously golden haired heir decided to dismantle it piece by piece, and now — now every breath felt like a fight for his life.

    Summary

The other dancers dampen their feet and move swiftly over the coals, making only single advances on Mydei that imitate attacks before they dart back out of the fire. But Mydei remains steadfastly in place, shifting his feet in time with the weapon drills his movements imitate. A step forward, the thrust of an imaginary spear; a step back, the shimmy of his upper body, the twist of a shoulder as if dodging an arrow.

Phainon sees these movements every day; feels them, even, put to good use against him in their duels. He knows them intimately already, and they somehow feel more charged here than ever before.

But there are others touching Mydei in his stead tonight. Little things: The respectful brush of a hand over his shoulder as a dancer slips by. A gentle tilting of his chin to offer a sip of honeybrew, and the swipe of a hand to catch what spills. The brush of thigh against thigh as someone lunges toward him as if thrusting with a sword.

Phainon inhales sharply at that one, something ugly and possessive burning inside of him.

    Summary

Behind the glass, careful script paints flowery imagery of spars under a golden sun, of quiet dinners that carry low conversations late into the night, endless prose of a domestic life thought impossible. If it is only a hopeless fantasy now, Mydei reads with bated breath, then in every life after I will reach out again and again to take your hand in mine.

Mydei inhales sharply. Turns on his teleslate. Slowly dials Phainon’s number from memory.

Phainon picks up on the first ring. “Mydei! Is something the matter?”

Hearing Phainon’s voice, a million wrong words pool at the tip of his tongue. When were you planning to confess that you’re in love with me, Mydei wants to say.

“I’m at Okhema’s museum for the exhibit you told me about,” Mydei says eventually. “It’s been… informative.” Why did you write a dozen love letters to me in the span of three days, he doesn’t mention.

[in which phainon learns the hard way why keeping track of your belongings is so important. mydei gets ahold of some letters long overdue.]
