Summary
To be human is to want. Wanting food so badly that you’ve gone past hunger and into delirium. Wanting to sleep, but being too cold to, because Dario’s drunk away the firewood money again. Wanting a shred of safety, a taste of compassion, a brief example of what it might be like to live a life free from pain and fear and longing. Humanity, in Dio’s eyes, has nothing in particular to recommend it.
In which Dio struggles with the stress of humanity and makes a fateful decision.

Summary
Standing here, Dio feels like he has emerged into a wasteland, that those fishermen were the last scions of an extinct race, and after finishing them off Dio is the last person alive. Looking out across the moonwashed sandstone of the city, he feels more alone than he ever has.
