Losing someone close to you is rough. Grief is a strange thing, it affects appetite, sleep patterns, mood. May had reassured Peter many times that he was not crazy for feeling crazy. That he simply needed to give himself time.
He also read about the process of grief in a pamphlet Happy gave him.
So, when he gets back from the funeral at the lake house and walks into his bedroom to find Mr. Stark lying on the rug, ankles crossed, twirling his thumbs, and generally looking extremely alive…
…well…

“Dad will protect us.” Peter murmured lifting his head to look at Tony, eyes full of trust and love.
Tony softened brushing his hair back and kissing his forehead. Peter’s heart all but exploded in his chest at the loving gesture.
“That’s right baby, dad will protect you.” Then Tony did the same to Morgan earning himself a sweet giggle, and sloppy kiss to the cheek in return.OR A storm hits the lake house and Peter is scared. It dredges up all Peter's fears and doubts of belonging. Tony Stark refuses to let his son think he doesn't belong and reminds him he has a family.

All she could grab ahold of in her mind’s eye was the dark corridor of Judy’s apartment and a closed bedroom door. Behind it, a weak voice. A whisper, begging for something.
Lorraine sat up and ran her hands over her face; the longer she laid still, the faster her heart skipped, and she couldn’t bear the uncertainty. She felt Judy’s fear and couldn’t stand to go to sleep with it pushing against her own mind.
“I’m calling her,” said Lorraine while she tossed away the duvet and set her feet to the floor. She was down the stairs before Ed could say a thing.

Tony pops back into the world two years after his death. That’d be good news, except Tony can’t see his feet, and now there’s a spider kid running around with a mess that’s just begging to be fixed. (Post-NWH fix-it.)

Summary
Peter Parker was just trying to have a normal evening after his patrol - as normal as they'd been after the whole world forgot his existence. Suddenly finding himself in the middle of nowhere definitely was not on his list of to-do's, especially when it turns out he's been thrown into another universe. Another universe where he's apparently dead. At least Tony Stark was alive, even if he thinks that Peter is some hallucination.
