Max doesn't die during the Waylon Prank. No, he doesn't die because Richie saved him. When Max finally comes back to school after two weeks of healing, everyone expects him to jump right back into bullying. What they don't expect is him to be almost subdued and almost nice to everyone.
Pete, Ruth, Grace and Steph are surprised and curious about it, and their curiosity only grows when they find an old yearbook revealing that Max and Richie used to be friends. You can only imagine their shock when there's hints it might have been something more.

His voice sounds awful. He’d wrecked it losing his shit in his car, and only now considers how much of his breakdown shows in his words and his face and the weary slump of his shoulders. His eyes are probably puffy, his face probably splotchy red, and she’ll read him in a second and know more or less what happened.
She does figure it out, but thankfully doesn’t comment on it, just runs her thumbs gently beneath his eyes. “If you need somebody to fight your boss for you, I’m down. This is getting ridiculous.”
“It’s not his fault, either. You’ll probably have to fight the CEO to get anything done.”
“Then just badge me in, babe, I’ll figure it out from there.”
