Summary
A decade ago, the answer would have slipped from Mel King’s lips without a second thought. But looking back at the wreckage of her past, she no longer has a simple answer. Armed with strict medical algorithms and a flawless professional mask, Mel has built a quiet life treating the traumas of strangers to avoid facing her own.
But tonight is about to become the worst shift of her career. Amidst the sterile chaos of a crowded ER, a critically injured patient is wheeled through the double doors. He is broken, bloody, and clutching her wrist with an agonizingly familiar grip.
Ten years of running, ten years of silence, and Mel is suddenly staring into the eyes of her patient—and her greatest nightmare: her father.

Summary
“I’m jealous.” It escapes before she can let herself back out, “That my sister has a sex life, and I don’t.”
She doesn’t know why she’s admitting that to him. She honestly doesn’t. It’s embarrassing.
“Right there with you.” His voice is low, “How long–?”
She chews at the bottom of her lip, doing the mental math, “Three years…You?”
“Thirteen months.”
Warmth pools in between her legs, and she clutches his hand like it’s a lifeline.
It’s barely a whisper, she’s so afraid to say it,
“Close the trunk.”
---
“Wait, holy shit, King–” The wand stills inside of her as Trinity freezes the frame.
“What?” She asks, “God, it didn’t nick something, did it? I’m not about to bleed to death?”
“No, but you might pass out.” Trinity answers, “Maybe?”
“What is it?” She tries to sit up, but Trinity’s already turning the ultrasound monitor around to show her.
Her heart stills as she takes in the tiny flickering heartbeat on the screen in front of her, “Oh–”

Summary
Trinity ran a handful of toilet paper underneath the sink and used the wet glob to wipe away her blood. She pulled out a bottle of hydrogen peroxide from beneath the sink and poured a small amount directly on the cuts and hissed at the sting of it. She wrapped gauze around her leg, and pulled her pants back on, and splashed her face with cold water.
Maybe if someone had only cared, even a little bit, they both could have been saved before it was too late.
Trinity snuck outside in the dead of night and shoved the rope beneath some trash bags in their apartment building’s dumpster.
She laid awake in bed, her head and her thigh throbbing angrily.
And she decided to become a doctor that very night.

I genuinely put Santos through the ringer. She ends up as a patient in the very hospital she works at.
