"Nico could always tell when he got a soulmark. He felt a little brighter, a little more present. The gold lines warmed his body like sunlight peeking through the clouds.
They were so pale, though, and the lines so thin that they were almost illegible. They were delicate like spider silk, and just as easily brushed away. One day, here: the next, they were gone. Nico had never heard of soulmarks going away, but most of his rarely stayed for long. Nico thought the connection must be staticy. Maybe Nico's soulmate was a ghost. Usually, the marks turned gray if your soulmate was dead. Nico could talk to dead people, though, so maybe it wasn’t as much of a problem.
He always fit in better with the dead, anyway. He was a relic from another time. The living never wanted someone cursed like him. They thought he was annoying. Morbid. Creepy.
It made a lot of sense."
