“She died quite young,” Castiel affirms.
Dean threads their fingers together into something messy, a cat’s cradle, and follows the intersecting lines of their digits with his eyes as if there is something fascinating about the places they touch.
“Twenty-nine,” he says, and brings their hands to his chest before locking eyes with Castiel, “she was twenty-nine, first time around.”
Must be the niceness of it all, the tranquility of life that caught up to them after too many years running that has Dean so pensive now. He furrows his eyebrows, “I was twenty-nine.”

Or: Mary died when she was 29 years old. So did Dean, once. Sometimes Castiel has to remind him that being dead and having died are two different things.

Summary
It’s—God, everything is so—Dean’s supposed to be this all-knowing guy. This gifted savior come to fix all that got screwed over before. But the longer he’s allowed to make choices and the longer he squeezes himself into this body that doesn’t fit him anymore, the more he feels like he’s just not cut out for it.
He's not smart enough for this. Not creative or artistic enough—if the past were made out of clay, vulnerable to whatever shape Dean’s hands are capable of making, then he thinks the past might take the shape of a gun. He imagines the timeline crumpling in his hands to the metaphorical barrel end of it, a dark tunnel waiting for the inevitable explosion to go off by his calloused fingers.

Or: During the rapture, in a moment of hopelessness, Jack sends Dean back to 2015 on a mission: Kill God. Only, he gets the day wrong and Dean pops up in 2008, freshly out of hell with too much baggage and not a clue how to stop Chuck. He also struggles with accountability (or lack thereof). But what else is new.

Then it’s just him and Jack. Him and the kid.
And the entire near future branches out before him, a sad unflattering replica of Sylvia Plath’s fig tree. Where the possible futures don’t stretch into years and lifetimes, but grow into short stalks of accidental maiming. Where the kid gets sick because Dean doesn’t know how to feed him, gets bruised because Dean doesn't know how to hold him, cries because Dean isn’t his mother or his father or a sub-family he can count on.

Hockey meant Sam and Bobby and Benny and Victor and Gabriel and hell, his entire team. So when Victor gets traded, Russian-star-turned-new-teammate Castiel Krushnic becomes a threat. As much as Dean hates him for that, the longer he sticks around, the more he begins to threaten that first rule too. Dean’s been taught his whole life that those who play hockey should not be captivated by deep accented voices and the way a guy handles his stick, so how the hell is he supposed to justify what he’s starting to think about Cas? All Dean wanted at the beginning of the season was to win, and now all he wants to do is figure out how he feels about Cas and how to deal with it without ruining his career and tearing his family apart.
