    Summary

Gustave sits at the cliffside with Maelle tucked to his side. He’s writing, because of course he is. Writing was the gift he had been born with. Stories came to him as easily as breath to his lungs. Use of words had been forged into his very soul even when he was denied so. Even now, while he does not remember.

Verso never understood it, though perhaps his kind were never meant to—creating worlds with lavish vocabulary over the graceful stroke of a brush—and yet he never found them any less beautiful when written by him.

In another life, Verso—the true Verso—had risked everything for those pretty words, in another world where the blending of art and literature was forced apart, made forbidden and long thought impossible.

In this life—or unlife, perhaps—he can only stare at both parts of his heart with a hollowed soul and memories of fire upon his skin.

(In which Gustave lives, and Verso’s Canvas harbors one more grief-stricken soul.)

    Summary

"The dark waves are seething and gurgling, licking the caramel sand like a thirsty animal laps up the water by the stream; and they whisper words of wisdom in their mysterious oceanic language few can understand. They spew well-polished stones and pieces of colorful glass onto the shore, underwater treasures tangled in a mess of rotting seaweed. But among the usual aquatic gifts, there’s one in particular that differs from other inanimate objects; it is a body of a young man, pale skin shining under the bright moon light with an almost otherworldly glow."

Verso Dessendre finds himself laying on the familiar shore, water in his lungs and a ringing silence in his head. How did he end up in the Canvas again, and why does it look so different from what he painted years ago, as a child?

    Summary

Monoco’s station was just as it had always been, Gommage or no. The painted curves of it flowed and trailed, one long brush stroke after another. The snow stayed, and so did the grandis, the gentle petals of iron, the curve of playful trains.

Only Monoco had left. Only they had changed. And then they’d returned, and for what? To scavenge the chroma of corpses long gone to rest? To scrape the paint from a hundred abandoned creations?

    Verso was tired.

“Yes,” he said, “I could have saved him.”

Or: Maelle brings Gustave back, and accidentally ties his soul to Verso. This changes things.
