Cassian Diaz. Former hockey player turned pairs skater who had spent the last six or so years with a different partner. A partner who had, tragically, retired from career-ending injury. They’d been decent. Top 10 finishes at Nationals. Occasional international competition.

Her head throbs. Her mouth tastes like expensive wine and poor decisions. Her body aches in places that make her face heat even in her half-asleep state. She’s naked—completely, utterly naked—in a hotel bed that is definitely not hers, wrapped in sheets that smell like sex and some woodsy cologne that she can still taste on her tongue.

A yearning she only let herself feel while standing right here, alone, with her thoughts, and the strange kinship she felt with this goddess, the Queen of Queens, and Savior of Worlds.
“She kind of looks like you.”
Nesta blinked, irritation coming down like a hammer at the interruption to her solitude. Turning her head, she took in the man beside her. He was egregiously tall, dressed in a white T-shirt and jeans, an open flannel with rolled up sleeves overtop. His long hair was pulled back, and he was very obviously fit. A backpack was slung over one shoulder, casually.
It was a sharp contrast to her turtleneck sweater and plaid skirt, her black tights and oxfords, the briefcase at her feet.
“Excuse me?” She asked, blunt and cold.
The man raised a hand, pointing to her beloved painting.
“Lady Death. She kind of looks like you.”
