As far as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is concerned, there’s a logical explanation for everything. So when he encounters a new dragon in the middle of a storm, he starts looking for answers, unaware that the dragon has already made an unlikely friend.
Jack Frost stopped expecting much from people a long time ago. There’s little point in connecting with someone who can’t even see you, but watching Hiccup stumble through theories is too entertaining to resist.
Hiccup, however, has no idea Jack is there.
At least, not yet.
(An AU that starts before HTTYD 2 and rewrites canon from there.)

Jack had long given up on trying to communicate with anyone. Not Manny, not the other Guardians, and certainly not Vikings. He much preferred to spend his time with the dragons of the Archepelego. They kept him company on his island while he protected them from hunter ships and the worst of winter.
What he did not anticipate, however, was a whole group of dragon-riding nuisances landing on his island. And not only that, but one could hear him.
And Jack wasn't having any of it.
