    “Steve, are you awake?” Her voice cracked embarrassingly on the first word. She tightened the blanket around herself. “I know it’s early, but… I was just wondering.”

    She released the button. The static settled back in.

    She waited.

    A few seconds.
    Half a minute.
    Long enough that she wondered if he’d fallen asleep with the walkie next to him and wouldn’t hear her until morning.

    Then, suddenly—

    “Libs?”

    His voice broke through the speaker, clearer than she expected. Not groggy. Not irritated. Just… awake.
