“Get home safe,” Buck says. Then, as always, he thinks: I love you.
Eddie goes very, very still. His breathing stutters to a stop. There’s a strange expression on his face, his mouth twisting in that way it does when he doesn’t know what to say.
Buck squints blearily at him. “What?”
A muscle in his jaw twitches once. Twice. The muted light illuminates the quiet movement of his throat as he swallows.
“What’d you just say?”
“Get home safe,” Buck repeats, a yawn overtaking the last word. “Why…?”
Or: the one where Buck, drowsy and delirious on pain medication, confesses his love to Eddie without realizing it.

Summary
Suddenly, that flirty smirk still present on his lips, Eddie pulls the cowboy hat from his own head and plops it right onto Buck’s curls, making sure to press it down softly so it will stay.
“Here you go, cowboy,” he says, his voice gentle, yet heated in a way that Buck has never heard from him before. As he watches, Eddie’s tongue pokes out, wetting his lower lip, before his teeth sink into it. Buck immediately recognizes the signs for what they are. His best friend is flirting with him. “I’ll be with Chim and Hen when you’re done.”
And then he is gone. His perfect ass on full display as he saunters away to where their friends are ready to leave.
Thoughts whir through his brain. He knows the sign, has used it before, back during his own ranch days. When he used to wear cowboy hats regularly.
Setting your cowboy hat onto someone else’s head means you want them to ride you.
Such a simple rule. Easy to know, easy to spot. An offer. A question.
But right now? A fucking claim.

“It’s okay,” Maddie says, and Buck doesn’t want to pick at the scab, but he’s already doing it.
Because it’s not okay for him to tear out Tommy’s heart and play with it. It’s not okay for Buck to be in a relationship with Tommy but in love with someone else. It’s not okay for Buck to realize that horrifying thought in the middle of kissing Tommy goodnight after one of their dates. And then he just stood there, frozen while his world was shaken to its core. Because one word just kept replaying in his head and has been ever since he realized it.

Because how do you go back to normal after knowing you love Eddie Diaz? You don’t. You can’t.

Buck just wants to enjoy a Halloween night out with the 118, drinking and dancing and making fun of Ravi's costume, all the while trying to handle his newfound feelings for Eddie. He thinks he's being smart, trying to get over his best friend, or at the very least, keep his secret under wraps.
He ends up doing the exact opposite. It ends up yielding great results.

“What are you doing here?” he asks his niece when she starts squirming back out of his embrace, carefully setting her down. He almost asks if she ran away from home, because he knows it would make her giggle, but thinks better of it. “Tea party? And I wasn't invited?”
“She's hanging out with her uncle Eddie today,” Eddie says, leaning back on his hands. He's smiling when he looks up at Buck, a real smile, and his whole face scrunches happily when Jee-Yun crashes into his side.
Buck feels like he needs to look away, but he has no idea how.
or: one toddler, two conversations, and so many missed opportunities for buck to act like a guy not in love with his best friend.
