“It should be,” Hans said, grinning faintly. “But it’s not. Not with him. He listens. And he’s good.”
She arched a brow, her voice lowering slightly. “Good?”
Hans turned toward her, propping himself on one elbow. The firelight caught the mischief in his eyes, warming the sharp edge of his grin. “You ever wonder why I can coax you apart with my tongue like I was born to it?”
She flushed deeper, her gaze dropping for a moment before flicking back up, equal parts amused and scandalized. “I assumed you were simply gifted.”
He gave her a crooked smile, something tender and wicked glinting behind it. “I was not. Not until Henry.”
Jitka’s eyes widened, a soft gasp caught between a laugh and disbelief.
“No,” she whispered, incredulous.
“Oh yes.”
