There was no birdsong outside. The hour was too early, morning’s watery blue light still hesitant to seep through the window.
Through sleep-heavy eyelids the king looked unmarred, the milky low light doing well to hide any pallor mortis. He could have just been sleeping, as with any other day. It was his stillness that betrayed him. His chest did not rise and fall with the easy rhythm of breathing. The warm blanket of pre-dawn kept it from yet looking eerie.

Summary
When they got to Vash’s room, the man in question all but threw himself face first onto the bed like Wolfwood wasn’t there. After a beat he followed suit, wrangling blankets to his side before the other monopolized them all. Once they were settled in, Vash got on his side and just looked at him, smiling a little.
“I still can’t believe Sheryl made you sleep out in the living room! She’d sooner kick me onto the floor than have a guest on the couch.” His whisper had gained a conspiratorial edge, like they were ten year olds at a slumber party.

Summary
“You have visitors, love,” said Mom, later that day. Her fingertips brushed the glass over Alex’s photo. His face looked kind, with deep brown eyes framed by dark curls of hair.
Death was weird. Back then, death was just a misunderstanding, and there were witnesses. It was something that made Mom go all quiet some days, something that was like cold sleep but somehow worse.
The three of them stood in front of a small shrine for Alex, the best substitute for a grave on a dying planet light years away.
