Summary
His current project has to be perfect.
While he’s not as picky as Viktor when it comes to prioritizing form over function, he does still prefer the most direct and structurally sound designs when crafting. Unfortunately, this particular piece is all about form. The curves of this plate of metal have been painstakingly coaxed into something familiar, but not quite right, so he keeps trying, heating and reheating the metal on repeat.
Suddenly, he takes the mask out of the forge, waits for it to cool, stares.
And the machine herald stares back at him.

Or, Jayce being very happy with his wonderful new post-canon life except for the part where the human brain deals poorly with trauma sometimes. Follow-up to previous work, won't mean much without reading it first.

Summary
There is a thing, and it is moving. He imagines he sees the back of its head, brown and life-bleached. A slash of blue rags swaddling a creature of stumbles and stubbed toes, faun-fresh footsteps over terrain that feels five miles below.
There are cords. They are ashen greyandpurple, kintsugi spun between the threads. Too soft to be metal, too hard to be flesh.
Viktor is not here.

“I think we should go to the beach together,” Jayce says, in a rushed sentence.
Then Jayce adds, “To study.”
And then, after another beat, Jayce concludes, “Crustaceans.”
Viktor stares. Then clarifies, bewildered, “For the Hexclaw?”
“Yeah,” Jayce says, gripping the back of his neck. Viktor notes that Jayce is not far off from the color of a steamed crustacean himself, at the moment. “For the Hexclaw.”

Summary
So there they are, a shopkeep and a curious stranger, losing daylight in silence. The man studies Jayce’s work while Jayce studies him, and isn’t curiosity just one hell of a thing? It can motivate a topside scientist to brave the gray, and it can bully out years of ingrained wariness to make room for itself.
The man moves again, the necessary three steps left to reach a workbench of works-in-progress. The metalwork of it is rough, all hinges and mechanisms wrought from steel scrap. The beginning of a knee joint, sitting next to the first prototype of Jayce’s own leg brace.
The man’s gaze lingers there, intent and molten in the dimming afternoon light. Then he’s reaching out, reaching forward, his careful fingers tracing along welding seams and scratches in the metal, and Jayce’s curiosity flash-boils.
“Can I help you?”

The distant look in the Mage’s eyes snapped to the gap of the roof, to the near-silent tuttering of other, watchful machines down below. “No, it doesn’t matter. You will be safe up here. It should be simple enough, to lay protective wards into the earth of the tower. I won’t let anything happen to you,” he vowed.
Promises held no impetus in this world, where nothing happened, nothing changed.
The Machine reset its position on its knees and replaced its hands on the weapon of a fallen era. I can’t stop you from making useless promises, can I?
Somehow, without doing anything, the Machine had gained a visitor and protector.
