“Sutures,” Daniil tells him sharply. His hand isn't moving, staying still between Artemy’s leg like the worst kind of tease. “If you move too much, they’re going to tear, and I’m telling you this: I will not lay with a bleeding man. Do you understand?”
The threat leaves him at a crossroads; he can choose to argue, which he knows would be stupid, because Daniil doesn't do empty threats. On the other hand, not arguing would feel like giving in, and Artemy doesn’t like giving in.
So he settles for a middle ground, which is sourly saying, “if I’m not allowed to move, how are you thinking this will happen?”
“I’ll show you,” Daniil tells him calmly, “but only if you do what I tell you.”
“That sounds an awful lot like blackmail,” Artemy points out. His bedpartner laughs, and now he’s confused, if intrigued.
“Oh, dear Haruspex.” It’s a sigh, spoken against his ear as Dankovsky leans in close, and if the shivers weren’t enough to keep him silent, the nickname surely is. He only thinks he’s called him that once before, and it was when he was trying to make the hardest decision in his life. The contrast is stark, and it takes him out of himself for a moment. “I think there is a lot you could learn.”

Resources, though abundant now, would inevitably run out. The plague had taught this to Daniil. A lesson he would have never learned in the Capital, for better or worse. Abundance had come to the town in the plague's aftermath, but he couldn't seem to accept it. All he could see was lack.
But there were theories of another way to care for the sick and suffering. No pills. No morphine. Research pursued to determine the true power of persuasion, of the voice over the mind. With his guilt looming over him, the strange technique of hypnotism intrigues Daniil.
And anything that intrigues Daniil, intrigues Artemy.

Summary
Heliokleos has been messing around with Kheves for a while now, and it always goes the same way: a seven-foot-tall shark man folds Kleos in half and fucks him stupid, and Kleos desperately tries to maintain that he is not in love with Kheves (he is in love with Kheves).
And then that seven-foot-tall shark man takes a sword to the ribs for Kleos, and everything goes sort of sideways.

It takes Daniil another moment to even comprehend it, the sight of a body utterly decimated, not just opened up for him neatly, but torn open, with the Ripper’s hands still stuck almost to the elbow inside the mugger’s chest.
Daniil finds Artemy in the middle of a kill and gets really gay about it :D

Summary
If Artemy could memorize the Latin vocabulary required for an exam – that satisfied him. But beyond that, what use could he have for learning a barbaric, emotionless and clinically precise language like that?
The answer to that question came to him years later, clothed in a snakeskin coat and with an arsenal of snappy remarks that somehow enamored Artemy as much as they annoyed him.

“I wanted to see how you’re doing. I know this—being here wasn’t your first choice.”
“No,” says Daniil. It’s hardly an admission. “But few of us have had our first choice these days, have we? In adversis, necesse est accommodare.” Never mind that he’s not adapting especially well at all, that Artemy has seen the proof for himself. “If you’re feeling responsible for me, I’d rather you save it for someone better suited for your protection.”
At that, Artemy looks up, and straight into Daniil’s eyes.
This close, in the light of the gas lamps, they are an unfathomable color and depth: light and simultaneously shadowed, somewhere between blue and green and gray, like staring into a clear lake that stretches deeper than the eye can make out. Daniil stares into those depths and finds himself straining forward, leaning, as if he could tip into that body of water and lose himself beneath the surface.
“No,” Artemy says at last, his voice low enough to stoke that heat in Daniil’s gut again. “I invited you here because I think you’re the only person in town I’m not responsible for."

"The idea of Daniil leaving Town-on-Ghorkon made his heart lurch, for reasons he’s sure he’d be able to place if the sun were up. For now, he revelled in the feeling of the doctor’s remarkably smooth skin under his own calloused fingertips, the warmth of the fire returning a soft pink to his flesh."

"...What, do I smell that bad?" Daniil asked, both doubtful and incredulous at the admission that Artemy really was sniffing him.
"No," Artemy answered instantly. "Not bad, just different. Couldn't tell if it was you or not."
An embarrassing rush of dopamine flooded Daniil all at once; why was it so appealing for Artemy to like the way he smelled? He knew he likely was nothing short of noxious, soaked in sweat and laboratory-grade chemicals and tobacco, but apparently Artemy didn't mind that.
"So?" Daniil urged, knowing how strange he must seem but powerless to stop himself from prodding at the weak spot. "What do I smell like, then?"
The lamplight danced like fireflies in Artemy's eclipsed eyes. "Pink."
Daniil raised an eyebrow. "Pink?"

“My life isn’t worth the Town’s,” Stanislav whispers. ‘My life isn’t worth anything,’ he adds in thought.
“Mm, but it’s not worth losing either,” Grief counters. His voice is a soft croon, like a lullaby. Stanislav closes his eyes in surrender. “We need you alive to finish that vaccine. We need you alive to doctor the sick… And I need you alive for peace of mind.”
That gives him pause. What can he say to that? No words come to mind.

The jail was quiet, blood coagulating on the floor like resin. Daniil Dankovsky stood above the carnage, hands shaking slightly as a plume of smoke rose from the revolver like a lost soul. Every time he took a life, he wondered if he would ever be able to save as many. The karmic weight was starting to feel heavy on his shoulders, but it was too late to look back.
In the dirty cell was the man Daniil had sought out: the Haruspex, Artemy Burakh. He was… gorgeous, to put it lightly. His features were sharp and striking, his frame tall. There was an air of mystery about him, as if he was the only splash of color in this dreary town— the only person he could see clearly.
