Mira snorted despite herself. Damn it. “You always this annoyingly calm, or am I just special?”
Rumi’s eyes flicked over her, quick but thorough, then settled back on her face. “Bit of both,” she said. “You’ve got a certain… energy.”
“Is that your nice way of saying ‘unhinged’?”“More like ‘volatile,’” Rumi corrected, amused. “Unhinged implies chaos for fun. Yours? More like survival.”
That wiped the humor right off Mira’s face.

Summary
A plate shattered against the floor from the kitchen. An incredible range of emotions managed to make their way across four faces in the course of two seconds. Rumi's laughing stuttered to a halt when she noticed the pale look on Mira's face, her eyes blown wide with what could only be described as pure undiluted panic.
Playing over the last few seconds in her head Rumi's face went through the most change. Laughter, then confusion, followed by concentration, then realization. Horror dawned on her face as her eyes bugged out of her head realizing what she'd just said, who she'd said it in front of.
As her head whipped around to locate the sound Rumi saw Zoey. The most diabolically chaotice grin spreading slowly across her face. Thrill, pure joy, she was in the best position in the entire apartment area. Uninvolved, unembarassed, able to enjoy whatever glorious chaos was about to unfold.
