This moment felt as if it was from a page of one of Nunew's dark novels. It was the kind of scene that would’ve made his pulse quicken as he read well into the midnight hour. This was different, though. It wasn’t an instance imagined from the pages of a book. It was far more real.
Midnight black hair, pale high cheekbones, an endless black gaze that made him feel as if he was staring into the face of doom itself. In the dark abyss of that stare, he could see the reflection of what he'd done. A deal had been made, one that he was unlikely to escape.
Nunew didn't like constraints. He'd found freedom in the rhythms of his day to day life, working at the book cafe and wrinkling wads of paper as he tore through meaningless ideas, trying desperately to become the writer he'd always wanted to be.
But that was before. Before everything was called into question. The dark angelic figure who stood unnervingly near to him had said very little. But as he turned to leave, speaking only four words, the finality of it all slowly began to sink in.
