Summary
It has become a habit, she realizes. To climb into Ben’s bed, to see him.
It started in grade school, the week she stayed over at his house and was tormented with nightmare after nightmare after nightmare.
And now, eight years later and three thousand miles away from home, she still seeks him out, still looks for him in the darkness. Even if it only requires slipping out of her bed and crawling into his, next door.
She seeks warmth, seeks something to fill the aching loneliness that festers in her heart, late at night, like an open wound. It has become a habit, an instinct, really, to seek him out.
Devi expects this to become a lot more complicated than it does.

Devi sneers. “You passed, didn’t you? So clearly they’ll give a license to anyone.”
Ben hums. “That brings us to condition number two: no snide comments about my driving. If my skills are good enough to co-opt, you’re not allowed to mock them.”
“Anything else?” she asks through gritted teeth.
“One last thing.” He takes a step closer to her, and she finds herself fixed under the weight of his stare, pulse leaping. “My agreeing to this does not mean we’re friends again.”
For one painful second, the grip Ben Gross somehow managed to get on her heart earlier that year exerts itself, squeezing tight. And then she’s rolling her shoulders back and giving him a wolfish grin. “Oh, Gross. We were barely friends in the first place”
