    He’d touched that battle-worn cheek and it was cold; he’d reached to feel for breath at the bow of those lips and it was still; he’d leaned and pressed his goddamn ear to that blood-soaked chest and it was quiet—so quiet Steve thought he might die for it, for the way it made his ribs feel like they’d cave in and make his chest quiet, too. He checked. He checked.

    How the hell was he supposed to know that time inside this hellscape actually ran faster—even as the backdrop was stuck in ‘83—and the minutes it stole from the real world were the minutes that mattered? The kind that made the difference between life and death?

    He fucking checked.

    Or: two traumatized idiots recuperating, navigating government coverups, moving in together (sort of by circumstance, but then sort of on purpose), and figuring out the shapes love can take after it was almost (but also very-much-actually; except then not at all anymore, thank fuck) too late.
