Summary
The woman’s eyes widened, and her hand reached out, not quite touching Rumi, but close. “Not that you’re not beautiful, because wow, you-” She stopped, a look of realisation crossed her face “-I mean, no, wait, no, you are beautiful, but I wasn’t hitting on you, I have a girlfriend-”
Rumi ignored her chest squeezing.
“-A stunning girlfriend, Mira. I mentioned her, right? My girlfriend Mira-” The woman stopped abruptly and lowered her head down into her arms. “Jeez, Zoey, stop rambling at the deaf woman.” It was muffled, but Rumi heard it.
Silenced by grief, Rumi’s world is transformed when she crosses paths with Mira and Zoey, who guide her toward a voice she thought was lost forever.

Mira with Zoey holding her arm in a death grip: Hey, my girlfriend saw you from across the record shop, and we really dig your vibe. Can we buy you a vinyl?

—AVATAR:BENDING ALTERNATE UNIVERSE—
Her body remained angled away from them. She hadn’t decided whether to kill them yet. It would’ve been easy—too easy. A twist of her wrist, a flick of metal, and they’d be off Derpy’s back and falling through the clouds. But her muscles trembled from exhaustion, and she could taste the iron of her own blood in the back of her throat. She hated that. She hated being tired.
Still, she hated company more.
Taller girl spoke next. Her tone was clipped and cold, the sound of someone used to command. “Mira Jin.”
“Zoey Myung,” the smaller girl followed softly, hesitant but firm.
“So, you are the princess,” Rumi said bluntly, her voice cutting through the wind.
Zoey blinked, startled. “Uh, yeah…? Wait—how do you—are you blind? Sorry, that might be insensitive.”
“No.” Rumi’s tone didn’t change. One word, perfectly balanced between irritation and indifference.
Mira’s gaze hardened. “You’re debating killing us.”
“Correct.” The word was almost whispered, like it was obvious.

“Delivery! Can you sign here?”
Silky smooth, braided purple hair. Cute little mailcap. Glistening scars peer out from the corners of her sleeves, escaping from view when her cuffs fall right back over when she moves.
“Could you sign our marriage papers?” Zoey and Mira blurt out in unison.
“What?” Rumi pauses.
“Huh?” Zoey stares at Rumi unblinkingly.
“Ignore her,” Mira waves Zoey off with a small flick of her wrist, gathering her dignity. She offers a hand to shake. “I’m Mira, and this is my wife, Zoey.” Mira clears her throat and circles back to Rumi’s question.
“Sure. Do you have a pen?”
Rumi tucks the parcel and the letters under her arm and takes Mira’s hand, shaking it gently.
“I do!” Rumi smiles, and both of them audibly think, "Fuck," as she reaches into her inner breast pocket for a pen. “I’m Rumi. I’ll be in charge of the mail for your street from now on.”
Mira takes her pen. Zoey has not blinked once.

Summary
“How long?” Mira finally said, after what seemed like an eternity. “How long have they hurt?”
“My whole life?” Rumi said, as if she wasn’t sure. And in truth she wasn’t. “I was born with the markings, but they started to spread more dramatically when I was a teenager. That’s when I noticed the pain.”
