Turns out mermaids are real and he has to go full Prince Eric to rescue the Mer that got fished up alongside the box of junk. Except this mermaid is a pretty boy with brown curls and a sapphire blue tail that Tony is strangely drawn to. And when he gets legs right before his very eyes? Well. Turns out The Little Mermaid had a little more merit than he thought.

Sam freezes, his hand hovering in the air with the car keys inside. Panic grips his lungs in a death-grip when he hears Bucky's voice again, suddenly audible trembling with emotions. He turns around, his eyes falling on the warehouse in the distance. It suddenly looks haunted, mocking him from where it stands far away.

How many times did touch like this mean pain and suffering, instead of someone trying to take care of him? And it makes his heart ache, the thought of how much devastation and roughness Bucky’s been through, denied this kind of casual, compassionate touch that Sam doesn’t even think twice about offering.
Experimentally, he pulls his hand back. Bucky makes this low whining noise that makes Sam put his hand back immediately. And then he watches the way Bucky leans into it, eyelids fluttering like he’s almost falling asleep like this. “Fucking hell, shut up and go back to sleep,” Sam grumbles. God, Barnes is too masochist for his own good. Is that a super soldier thing? “I got you, man. I’m right here.”
And that must be the right thing to say, because Bucky lists sideways again. His head lands on Sam’s shoulder. Sam tenses just for a moment, because he wasn’t expecting Bucky to do it – but then it doesn’t matter, because it’s a comfortable pressure against his side.
Can feel Bucky where he’s pressed up against him, still just the slightest bit tense, still struggling between sleep and wakefulness.
“Sleep, Bucky,” Sam murmurs.
And that’s all it takes. All the remaining tension bleeds out of Bucky’s limbs, and he settles heavily against Sam’s side, a warm and welcome pressure. And Sam has read about things like weighted blankets, but never really considered them before. That might have to change, though, because Bucky’s weight against him feels grounding in a way he didn’t know anything could.
Five times Sam helped Bucky with his nightmares, and the one time Bucky returned the favor.

“Fucking hell, shut up and go back to sleep,” Sam grumbles. “I got you, man. I’m right here.”
It feels like the cargo plane again. Feels like someone actually cares about him, and Bucky’s really not sure what do with the emotions it sparks in his chest. He’s also, maybe, just a little too tired to examine it too closely. Lists sideways again, and can’t help the way his head falls on Sam’s shoulder. Sam tenses, briefly, and Bucky worries he’s fucked up again – but then Sam settles back against the couch, exhaling a little amused huff.
“Sleep, Bucky,” he whispers.
Sam’s so warm. It’s almost intimate, even though they’re not touching anywhere except head and shoulder. But Sam’s so warm, and it’s closer than Bucky’s been to another human being in, like, seventy years. It feels safe. Comfortable. Sam is there for him, and he doesn’t care that Bucky’s fucked-up brain woke him up in the middle of the night. Bucky exhales, and all the leftover tension sighs out of him. So, he does the only thing he can do. He relaxes down against Sam’s side, closes his eyes, and lets sleep carry him away.
Five times Sam helped Bucky with his nightmares, and the one time Bucky returned the favor.
