Summary
The colourful array of staircases serve as an almost humorous contradiction to the darkness that lies hidden deep within the walls of this establishment. Burdened souls left to die express their sorrows through wails, their cold fingers wrap around my throat and make it hard to breathe. I am suffocated with guilt.
I do not think I will ever get used to walking along this staircase. Maybe I won’t have to though, it could be my last time. I do hope that’s not the case.
Footsteps behind me, approaching quick. I ignore them, that is until someone grabs my shoulder with such force I’m nearly thrown off balance.
No surprises here, because it is Sang-woo. “You know something, don’t you? I heard you talking last night, tell me what you know.”
“I think it’d be best if you stopped poking your nose in other people’s business.” I say, turning my head as he sidles up beside me. “It’s considered rude.”
“You’re not from here.”
“Genius.”

Summary
Gihun continues to stare in horror as Miss. Kang tears yet another piece of flesh out of the poor woman’s neck. Blood spurts out, covering her face in tiny crimson droplets, but she isn’t deterred.
In a sudden blur of motion, she is tackled to the ground. She cries out, instantly trying to fight the force that working against her. The man who had tackled her presses his knee to the side of her face, effectively pinning her to the ground.
Gihun cautiously approaches the poor woman who is lying on the floor, his eyes widen at the sight of her.
Her throat is completely torn open and she is gurgling blood. Her eyes lazily flicker towards him, her half-lidded gaze locking with his, requiring so much effort for such a simple gesture. She lets out a choked sound, blood bubbling like boiled water and trickling down the sides of her face.
Gihun has to find a way to adapt to this new world and simultaneously not let his morals slip. But it proves hard, extremely hard.

The doctor’s gloved fingers lift your chin, tilting your face upward with a touch both clinical and unnervingly intimate.
“Your pulse is weak...” he murmurs, “Yet there is a softness to you that the Pestilence envies.”
You want to pull away, to break the suffocating proximity, but something in his gaze pins you in place. It’s not just authority. It’s an obsession, an aching need to know you. To have you. To possess you.
“Kindness is not my trade.” he continues, and the honesty is almost kinder than a lie. “Care is. Protection is. I intend to keep you from the Pestilence as long as it pleases me. Whether that is kindness depends on the patience of time and the constitution of your heart.”
He looks at you with the single-mindedness of someone who catalogues organisms by their capacity to survive and by the fissures they leave in the world. You want to pull back. You want to run; you have to run. But when he leans closer - so close you can feel the faint, medicinal scent of vinegar and lavender radiating from him - and speaks your name, something in your chest unclenches.
“Physician...” he whispers, brushing a thumb lovingly along the curve of your cheek. “Stay with me. Please."

The VIPs beside him stirred. He could hear the rustle of fur, the clink of ice in crystal glasses, the irritation of people unaccustomed to dealing with real human emotion.
“What’s he doing?” Eagle asked lazily. “He won, why is he so angry?”
“You’re asking why the maniac who came back willingly is angry?” Panther replied, already bored again.
But In-ho knew. He was daring In-ho to talk to him again. Because they both knew that he had just lost. When Player 333—one who had proven himself to be nothing but selfish and self-serving—had said, “Look after her,” then started the game, and thrown himself off the platform before Gi-hun could even blink, Gi-hun had proven that his faith in humanity wasn’t misplaced.
