After he crashed the car into that big slimey wall — all thanks to Dustin being the most distracting passenger — they failed to get a signal from anyone else participating in the crawl. Three hours of sitting around and waiting had made him impatient. But of course, he was only a little stupid. Not stupid enough to bring Dustin somewhere and lose the kid, but stupid enough to decide to go out on his own instead. He figured Nancy and Jonathan would be just fine, if they weren't busy making up and making out while Dustin gets eaten.
Why was he leaving? Well, he figured that the wall couldn’t just go on forever. If he finds the end of this thing he can get around to the other side. But it’d be kind of dumb to do that and leave his car... Okay, fine. Maybe he was just tired of watching Jonathan be all mushy with Nancy.
