    “Need implies a lack,” Mairon says, his voice a velvet warning. “I don’t lack, Mr. Greenwood. I take.”
    “Is that so?” Thranduil holds his gaze for a long beat, unimpressed by the threat. Then he gestures loosely towards the term sheet. “For a man who simply takes,” He notes dryly, “you seem to be willing to spend a great deal of money to get my attention.”
    Mairon allows the corner of his mouth to tip. “The salary fails to impress you?”
    “It’s extravagant,” Thranduil says. “Obscene, actually.”
    “It is a language most people understand,” Mairon replies.
    “And you assume I’m like ‘most people'," He says it lightly, but the challenge is there, woven into the soft cadence of his voice.

    Mairon Artano thinks he is conducting a job interview. Thranduil Greenwood isn't the one trying to impress.
    Hiring the opposition was supposed to be a calculated acquisition; but Mairon is about to discover that he has vastly underestimated the cost of doing business.
