“Klaus had his hands on the sink and his head under the water. He vaguely remembers Pogo’s lesson on fight or flight response, ambiguously aimed at him, with a sort of fleeting misery. Inevitably, when his lungs start to burn and his arms tense, he jerks up with a desperate and embarrassingly loud gasp that seems to make the mirror shudder on its hinges. His reflection looks positively drenched and tired, used up and burnt out with dark feral eyes that just won’t leave him alone.”

Set sometime before Five disappeared and before he started using drugs to cope. Basically I wrote this bc I'm obsessed with the umbrella academy now and i couldn't resist writing about Klaus before the events of the first season. He's just such a compelling character!

Ben watched him go. He wasn’t sure when they had grown apart. Somewhere when Ben had been happy that the others could see him, they had all lost sight of Klaus.

Klaus, still going through withdrawals, has just arrived in 1963 - and already he's resolved to leave as soon as possible. Then he meets Dave, who thinks he's smart and funny and totally not schizophrenic. When neither of them can sleep, they talk, and Klaus may have accidentally fallen in love.
(UPDATE 6/27/2022: This fic was written hours after the first season came out, and as such is incredibly dated and contains a lot of headcannons and speculation that was going around the fandom at the time. It doesn’t reflect my current writing abilities at all and it also barely makes sense now that seasons 2-3 have come out. However, out of respect for Elliot Page and my fellow transgender folks, I’ve gone back and edited all mentions of Viktor’s character to reflect his current name and pronouns. I encourage fellow authors of older fics to do the same<3)

His first drink was a luke-warm beer shoved into his hand by a stranger at the only bar in town that didn’t card. He was fifteen and he knew he would get in trouble for sneaking out the next morning. The thought only fueled him further.
In the flashing neon lights the ghosts that followed him around looked just like everyone else and the heavy bass of the club music drowned out their cries.
The beer tasted disgusting and so did the stranger’s tongue inside his mouth. Klaus embraced both.
Maybe because here, in this shady club, surrounded by girls in leather skirts and with glitter on their cheeks, he finally felt like he belonged. Maybe because the stranger’s firm hand on his hip made him feel comforted in the worst of ways.Bookmarked by Chiphead

Summary
In the frantic calculations of transporting multiple people through time, Number Five miscalculates and accidentally brings himself and Klaus into an alternate reality. Six different people have been adopted by Reginald Hargreeves, and so Klaus and Five must hunt down the original members in an attempt to once again stop the apocalypse.
In doing so, they get a glimpse to the lives each of them might have had had they not been adopted.
